IMPORTANT NOTICE

Due to the exceptional situation caused by COVID-19, and in order to curb the progression of the virus, the Directeur de l’état civil has put the following measures in place to ensure your safety, as well as that of our employees:

  • Reduced services due to the restricted number of employees at our offices;
  • Complete closure of our Québec and Montréal service counters;
  • Suspension of Directeur de l’état civil services offered at Services Québec regional offices.

These measures will have the following impacts:

  • Delay the registration of births, marriages, civil unions and deaths;
  • Increase processing time of applications for certificates and copies of acts;
  • Interrupt the "accelerated processing" service available for applications for certificates and copies of acts.

Persons who wish to apply for a certificate or a copy of an act that is to be sent to another country should consult the Canada Post website to verify if mail service has been suspended for the country in question.

Given that Canada Post is no longer accepting any letters or parcels for certain destinations, such certificates or copies of acts will be sent once mail services have resumed.

Thank you for your understanding.

This service is for you, if:

  • your name is mentioned in the act (section 148 of the Québec Civil Code).

If not, you must:

  • establish your interest in obtaining a certificate or a copy of an act that concerns someone else (section 148 of the Québec Civil Code).

The Directeur de l’état civil reserves the right to demand that persons applying for a certificate or a copy of an act supply the information and documents required to establish their identity and interest in filing an application.

The Directeur de l'état civil must ensure that only authorized persons request and receive certificates and copies of acts. Therefore, you cannot use the present service if you are acting as the legal representative (e.g., social service provider, spouse) of the person concerned by the event.
